42nd Annual Robert Hamilton Memorial Race 2015 - recap & photos
The 42nd annual Robert Hamilton Memorial race was a smashing success! A massive thanks to all the runners and volunteers who supported the race this year!
The day started chilly but sunny, eventually turning into sunny and warm. Who wasn’t grateful for that?? The race started at 10:00 AM sharp (the runners wouldn’t hear of it starting a minute sooner!) and off they went. The lead 5-milers were so quick that they were finished before the food was set out!
All finishers received a custom hand-made cookie medal courtesy of Karen Cooksley. It was a tempting snack, which some did partake of. Most runners hung out on the grass, soaking up the sun, while the results were tallied. Somehow the race director mixed up some of the 5 mile bib numbers and the corresponding runner which made the task more onerous. Thanks to Julie King and Anne Marie Landry for their perseverance! Thanks to the runners for their patience! And somebody fire that race director!!
Cash prizes were donated by the Calgary Roadrunners. Congrats to Melissa Kendrick (68:13) and Kevin Bliss (62:59) for each winning $200 in the 10 mile distance and to Melanie Hnatyshyn (36:04) and Kevin Fox (32:44) for each winning $100 in the 5 miler distance.
Age group prizes were $25 gift cards from Gord’s Running Store.
Draw prizes were donated by Gord’s Running Store, the Calgary Roadrunners, Impact Magazine, the Calgary Women’s Run race committee, the Original St. Patrick’s Day race committee and Lloyd Hamilton.
Lloyd Hamilton, Robert’s brother, dropped by briefly to chat and donate a few items as prizes. In the past Lloyd had been present each year to speak about is brother, Robert, and how much it meant to him that his brother was being remembered. In more recent years, Lloyd had lost track of the race so this day he was so happy to find it again and see the trophy cup shining in the sunshine. (A couple days earlier the RD had spent hours removing the tarnish. Whew!) He told the story of how Robert’s running friends had pooled their money to buy the trophy for the first race in 1974. Yup, it was still holding together... and even sometimes shiny!
Thanks from the Calgary Roadrunners to all who turned out! See you next year!
