Athabaska Ultra 100
July 28 @ 7:00 am - July 29 @ 1:00 pm
Experience the challenge of the Athabaska Ultra 100 – its past and present connections with Indigenous and community heritage, the beautiful prairie and river valley landscape, and the historic Athabasca Landing Trail.
Athabasca Landing Trail – 100 Mile Portage
The Athabasca Landing Trail is part of the Trans Canada Trail originally built in 1876 and named by the Hudson’s Bay Company as the “100-mile portage”. This portage connected the North Saskatchewan River with the Athabasca River and followed the traditional trails of the local Indigenous and Metis guides. It is an historic landscape route that links the rich history of the Indigenous people with the heritage of the many communities and stopping houses along the way.
Longest Ultra in Alberta – 175 Kilometers
It is the longest Ultra in Alberta and has 175 kilometers (175.63 kilometers or 109.13 miles, yes, we measured!) of scenic and picturesque views. The trail has gradual elevations and runners will be crossing two rivers. The race has 10 stages of rugged terrain and challenges with opportunities for both longer and shorter distances between transition points (TP). Solo racers or teams of up to 10 are welcome to register for this endurance challenge!
Indigenous and Community Stories
The Indigenous history of the Athabasca Landing Trail will be presented starting from the pre-race dinner to the finish line. At each transition area, racers and spectators will be a part of the historical continuity of the trail by participating in or watching the performances and re-enactments. Spectators will also have opportunities to discover and learn about each community hosting ten transition areas.
The Athabaska Ultra 100 starts in Fort Saskatchewan at West Rivers Edge and ends on the Athabasca Riverfront at Athabasca Landing. See overall trail map.
